Two GCSEs are taught over the two years: English Language and English Literature.

There are three main components to the Language Course: Speaking and listening (including role plays, presentations, group discussions and problem solving exercises) Reading is based on stories, novels, plays and poetry, but also includes non-literary materials. Both oral and written work is based on pupils' responses to these materials.

Pre 20th Century literature, including Shakespeare, will also be studied.Writing covers a wide range of different activities. Stories, plays and creative work based on pupils' own experiences and imagination will be used, reports and accounts of actual experiences (such as work experience) can be included, as well as responses to films, television programmes and newspaper editorials.

Most pupils will also be prepared for entry in the GCSE English Literature Examination. This involves the study of various additional novels, plays and poems, requiring some extra pieces of coursework being prepared. In total, pupils must provide six pieces of coursework for the two GCSEs.
