Key Stage 3 Through years 7 to 9, pupils follow the KS3 Numeracy Strategy. The KS3 programme of study is currently changing to include Critical Skills and Functional Skills. Extended learning is set twice each week. During KS3 there are 4 lessons of Maths. The curriculum includes opportunities for pair and group work, investigations and challenges based on practical concepts, computer activities, and mental and oral activities. Calculators are used in some units and pupils will need their own calculator. Pupils are set targets and their progress is assessed through classwork and extended learning tasks, unit assessments, termly assessments and annual exams. GCSE Functional Maths is offered to pupils during KS3. This qualification provides the equivalent of half a GCSE , Level 1 (D-G) and Level 2 (A*-C). Key Stage 4 The subject builds on the pupils' experience of Mathematics gained throughout Key Stage 3, extending their achievement in the four attainment targets: Ma1 Using and Applying Mathematics (included within the other sections of the programme of study) Ma2 Number and Algebra Using and applying number and algebra, Numbers and the number system, Calculations, Solving numerical problems equations, formulae and identities, sequences, functions and graphs. Ma3 Shape, Space and Measures Using and applying shape, space and measures, geometrical reasoning , transformations and co-ordinates, measures and construction. Ma4 Handling Data Using, applying and handling data, specifying the problem and planning, collecting data, processing and representing data, interpreting and discussing results. Assessment: Pupils will follow the AQA GCSE modular course. They will sit a 3 unit test, November and March in Year 10, and the final unit in June year 11. This course follows the new government syllabus incorporating functional Maths. Calculators: The correct use of calculators is an essential part of the GCSE course. 50% of the work in all module tests and examinations requires the use of a calculator. Pupils are asked to bring their calculator to all lessons to use in their class work and to help with homework. A scientific calculator is needed for both Higher and Foundation tiers. Calculators are available at cost price from staff in the Maths department. GCSE Statistics: GCSE Statistics is offered to the standard pathway throughout Year 9. GCSE Statistics will be a one year course and examined in June of Year 9. The syllabus includes a coursework project which counts for 25% of the final grade. Statistics includes the data handling strand taught in core mathematics with the extension of some topics. This course, as well as giving pupils an additional GCSE, will consolidate and strengthen their Mathematics at KS3 and GCSE.
