 Key Stage 3

During key stage 3, pupils follow a broad and varied range of activities fulfilling and exceeding the requirements of the National Curriculum. Activities are normally                  taught over 6 week blocks and include:

  • Soccer
  • Hockey
  • Netball
  • Cricket
  • Basketball
  • Badminton
  • Dance
  • Gymnastics
  • Health and Related Fitness
  • Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
  • Climbing
  • Table Tennis
  • Softball
  • Rounders
  • Athletics

An emphasis is placed on fostering values of cooperation, teamwork, leadership and achieving ones’ potential. ‘Personal Best’ would perhaps best describe the PE department’s philosophy.

Key Stage 4

P.E. GCSE (Full Course or Double Award)                                                                                                                                                                                                 

P.E. GCSE will provide candidates with an opportunity to develop their knowledge, skill and understanding of activities so that they can perform effectively and with      increased physical competence and confidence.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   The course is set out to ensure that, through their involvement in their chosen activities and  theoretical programme of study, candidates acquire confidence,                           self esteem,  respect for themselves and others, along with an understanding of the rules and conventions of their chosen games activities.  

The specification is structured to cover the following topic areas and skills:                                                                                                                                                         Topics covered in the course:

  • Effective Performance in four/eight chosen activities as either the performer, coach, choreographer or official
  • Skills for effective performance
  • Testing, Training and Lifestyle choices to asses and improve performance
  • Risk assessment                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Candidates will learn to:
  • Develop and apply advanced skills and techniques
  • Select and apply advanced skills, tactics, strategies and team skills
  • Evaluate and improve performance
  • Adopt a variety of roles in an activity such as performer, coach, referee and organisor
  • Understand rules of activity and safety regulations                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          
Assessment:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Pupils taking the full course:1 hour 30 min written paper-40% 4 practical sports/roles- 60%                                                                                                                        Pupils taking the Double Award:1 hour 30 min written paper- 20%1 hour 30 min with pre release material- 20%8 practical sports/roles 60%                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             The course provides a sound foundation for those candidates who may wish to enter certain  vocational positions where knowledge of Physical Education:              Games  may be seen as an advantage. Positions exist within the sports and leisure industry for such personnel. Alternatively, candidates may wish to continue                     with their studies in Physical Education at GCE AS/A Level in Physical Education or an Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education (Advanced GNVQ) in Leisure                  and Recreation. Such pupils may wish to eventually enter one of the many areas of the sport and leisure industry, the teaching or coaching professionals.                              Pupils will also gain the Heartstart 1st Aid Certificate whilst taking the GCSE.

Extra Curricular Activities

The PE department has a strong reputation across the city of Leeds in this area and offers a wide variety of both competitive and non-competitive opportunities in                        over 30 activities beyond the core curriculum.

School Sports Coordinator Programme (SSCO)

Carr Manor High School is a hub school for the SSCO and has strong established links with over 30 local primary and secondary schools as well as a variety of               diverse community agencies helping to raise the profile of sport in the community.
