Key Stage 3

Through years 7 to 9, pupils follow the Secondary National Strategy for Science using the QCA and additional schemes. The curriculum includes: Biology Chemistry Physics How science works Pupils are sorted according to their level within Science. Year 7 sets are based upon their KS2 results. Pupils are set targets and their progress towards them is monitored through:

  • Class work
  • Extended learning
  • Levelled assessment tasks
  • Termly exams

Pupils have 4 lessons of science a week.

Key Stage 4

This course allows the pupils to explore how Science works in the context of society, and as a progression to higher learning.

This is a new course based on 6 modules:

  • Biology             1a+1b
  • Chemistry         1a+1b
  • Physics            1a+1b                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    

These will be tested by objective tests in November, March and June. A centre assessed unit will be based on a class practical and is worth 25% of the final mark. Pupils have the opportunity to complete 3 class practicals, the bets mark being used.This GCSE will be completed in two years, allowing pupils to study either, Additional Science,  Applied Science or Biology/ Physics/ Chemistry in year 11 as further GCSEs.

Applied Science- Level 2 BTEC First Certificate/Diploma

This qualification is based on the approach of the learner taking on the role of being employed within the Science industry. The teaching of this course reflects the nature of the work within the Science-based industries, using a series of assignments and activities, which encourages pupils to take responsibility and ownership for their learning.  

Pupils will study six units during the course:

  • Chemistry Applications Science Principles
  • Physical Science Applications Science and the World of Work
  • Biological Applications Anatomy and Physiology

 This qualification is equivalent to a maximum of 4 GCSE’s –A*-C
